Sock Hop to Help Launch The Mighty WSGX 95.1 FM
BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge’s newest radio station, The Mighty WSGX 95.1 FM, will sign on the air in June, according to Woody Jenkins, president of the Chamber of Commerce of East Baton Rouge, which holds the FCC license to build the station.
The non-profit, non-commercial station will cover Baton Rouge and the proposed City of St. George. Jenkins said the station will offer news, weather, music, and some talk. It will BE strongly oriented toward community news, information, and events, he said.
Each day, more than 250,000 people drive on I-10, I-12, and Airline Highway, which will be in the station’s coverage area, he said. In addition to its over-the-air broadcast 24 hours a day, the station will be streamed live on the Internet and up on iHeart Radio, which will put the signal out worldwide.
The station will not sell commercial advertising but will sell sponsorships, which are similar but cannot include a call to action.
To help raise money to launch the station, the Chamber of Commerce of EBR will hold a fundraising Sock Hop at Dearman’s Soda Fountain in the Bocage Shopping Center from 8 to 11 p.m. on Friday, April 24. Jenkins said the event will be a great opportunity to introduce the station to many members of the community and secure more funding to help get it off the ground.
“The Sock Hop will be fun, especially for those of us who grew up in Baton Rouge in the Golden Era of radio in the 1950′s, 1960′s, and 1970′s,” he said.
Attendees are encouraged to wear casual attire and, if possible, to dress as they would have in the 1950′s or 1960′s.
Radio legend Bob Furlow of WLCS, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event. Local DJ’s, past and present, will introduce the music and read news bulletins.
Tickets are $100 a couple or three couples for $250. Single tickets $50. Sponsorships are also available: $500 for Honorary Newsman, $1,000 for Honorary Program Director, $2,500 for Honorary News Director, and $5,000 for Honorary General Manager. Sponsors will get a ticket for a couple to the event and credit with the station for non-commercial mentions on the station in a dollar amount equal to their respective contribution.
To purchase tickets, go to www.ChamberEBR.com or mail a check to “Chamber EBR,” 7575 Jefferson Highway, #60, Baton Rouge, LA 70806.
